Tours and Routes in Spain

IMG_7821.HEIC

Spain has always been a bit too far for me in the past. The thought of riding all the way down from Holland simply never appealled and also I had never really considered a much longer trip which a visit to Spain would require.

Inspired by a recent trip done by a friend actually convinced me to give it a try so in September 2026 I along with another riding friend decided to take the plunge and try a trip to Spain.

There are indeed several ways to get to Spain but I chose the option of ferry from Portsmouth with Brittany Ferries which is a 33 hour crossing that gets you to either Santander or Bilbao. The section below on the Ferries has more details and links.

The ferry option is much more relaxing and the option we chose arriving at 0830 in Santander has the advantage that you can already plan the first full days ride once you leave the ferry.

There are then several excellent riding areas close by. Los Picos and the whole length of the Pyrenees or you can head further down into Spain.

Our first trip was an amazing experience. Excellent accommodation, great roads and still relatively economic. As a rule I budget for EURO 200 per day including accommodation, food and fuel and in Spain this was easily done.

In the below section I'll explain a bit about the ferry  options  with some useful links so you can make your own mind up with what you want to do.

Ferries to Spain

There are several ways to get to Spain but if wanting to go by ferry there are 2 options.

Brittany Ferries operates services between Plymouth and Portsmouth to both Bilbao and Santander. The difference with the 2 departure ports is the time with the Plymouth option being slightly shorter but arrival times are, in my mind, less convenient.

Also the 2 ships on the Portsmouth link are very new ships built in 2021. The vessel options can be found on the

Brittany Ferries website along with costs, sailing times, cabins and all the information you need.

We found the Portsmouth option to be ideal for several reasons; the ferry departure time of around 2130, the ease of getting to Portsmouth rather than Plymouth and the arrival time in Santander. Its entirely up to you what you decide and planning and timing is paramount.
